The J.E.B. Stuart death site is located on West Grace Street in Richmond, Virginia. It was here the noted Confederate General died on May 12, 1864. He was mortally wounded the day before at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, six miles north of Richmond, when a retreating Union soldier shot him through the stomach. An ambulance carriage brought him here to the home of his brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Brewer. His condition was grave and it was felt there was no hope for recovery from his mortal wound. After a brief visit from Confederate President Jefferson Davis he continued to weaken. He uttered his last words: "I am resigned: God's will be done," then died at 7:38 p.m. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery. The Richmond Police Headquarters building now sits on the site of the former Brewer home. There is an historic marker on the street and a slab marker just next to the headquarters entrance.
