The Jacob Ruff House is located on Main Street in Lexington, Virginia. The Valley Federal style home was built in 1829 by John Ruff, a local shoe manufacturer. The family lived here, while the shoe business was located next door. In 1850 Jacob Ruff inherited the property from his father. In 1851 Main Street was lowered several feet to decrease its steepness and the Jacob Ruff house stills shows signs of this lowering as the original front door sits several feet above street level. The main entrance now sits on the side of the house. It is also noted that Jacob Ruff, then mayor of Lexington, invited President Millard Filmore to this home in 1851. The home was restored in 1974.
