The Woodrow Wilson Birthplace is located on North Coalter Street in Staunton, Virginia. The house, known as the Manse, was built in 1846 as a home for the minister of the Staunton First Presbyterian Church. In 1855 Joseph Ruggles Wilson, his wife Jessie Woodrow Wilson, and their two daughters Marion and Annie, moved into the Manse. Joseph accepted a job as pastor at the Presbyterian Church, having recently left a teaching position at Hampden-Sydney College. On December 28, 1856, Jessie gave birth to future president Woodrow Wilson in what was known as the birthing room. Woodrow lived in the home for just over a year, until early 1858, when Joseph took a new position in Augusta, Georgia. The Church retained the home until it was purchased by the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace Foundation. It was formally dedicated by Franklin Roosevelt in 1941. Restorations over the years have brought the Greek Revival mansion back to its 1850's appearance. The Woodrow Wilson Birthplace was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1969.
