James Dean's home is on Sand Pike Road in Jonesboro, Indiana along S 150E north of Fairmount. This was the actor's childhood home from 1940 to 1949. Although he was born in nearby Marion his family had shortly after relocated to Santa Monica, California, where they lived for several years. In 1938 his mother became ill with what would become terminal cancer and after her death in 1940 his father sent him back to Fairmount, to live with his aunt and uncle, Ortense and Marcus Winslow. He spent his formative years here, attending Fairmount High School from 1945 to 1949. After graduation he returned to Santa Maonica to live with his father and stepmother. By 1951 he had begun his acting career. After his death in 1955 he was buried at Park Cemetery in Fairmount, around a mile south of his childhood home.
