Ruth's Cafe is located on South Eutaw Street in Baltimore, Maryland. It was here the former bar was located, in a space now occupied by The Goddess Gentlemen's Club. In 1915, after the Boston Red Sox won the pennant, Babe Ruth used a portion of the $3780.25 check he received to buy this building and set his father, George Herman Ruth, Sr., up with a new bar. George lived above the bar, and Babe and his wife Helen would stay here during the off season. Babe would also work with his father behind the bar during the winter months. On August 24, 1918, during the end of the baseball season, in which the Red Sox were on their way to their third pennant in four years, Babe was notifed that his father had passed away. George had taken in his wife's sister, who lived on the premises with them. Her husband, recently arrested for statutory rape, was in the bar, along with her brother. The two men had words and an argument broke out. George intervened and sent the brother on his way, but outside, in front of the bar, George and the brother had more words, a fight broke out, and George fell and hit his head. He was taken to University Hospital where he died. Babe and Helen returned to Baltimore for the services, but it would be their last personal visit to the city.
