Nathaniel Hawthorne's birthplace is located on Derby Street, on the grounds of the House of the Seven Gables, in Salem, Massachusetts. The famed author was born here, in the home of his grandparents, on July 4, 1804. Hawthorne's family lived here until 1808, the year his father died at sea. They would move to a home on Herbert Street shortly thereafter. The circa 1750 birthplace originally stood at 27 Union Street, but by 1958 it had been purchased by the House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association and moved to the grounds of the House of the Seven Gables on Derby Street.
