Constanze Mozart's home is on Alter Markt in Salzburg, Austria. It was here the former wife of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived from 1820 to 1826. In the years after Mozart's death in 1791 Constanze attempted to publish all of the works of her late husband. In this she was successful and able to find some sense of financial security. While living in Vienna she met Danish diplomat George von Nissen in 1797. In 1809 the two were married and in 1812 moved to Copenhagen. After Nissen retired in 1820, the couple moved to this home in Salzburg. Constanze was reunited with her sisters, Aloysia and Sophie, who were both living in Salzburg at the time. The three would remain close until their deaths. In 1823 Nissen, a music historian, began a biography on his wife's late husband. Besides first hand accounts from Constanze, he also procured letters from Mozart's sister Nannerl, and was able to interview many people still alive from the great composer's time. Nissen didn't live to see his work completed. He would die in March 1826. Constanze relocated shortly thereafter. Mozart's biography was eventually published in 1829. The house in which Constanze lived is attached to the Cafe Tomaselli, Austria's oldest cafe, and a frequented spot for she and Amadeus during their time in Salzburg. There is a marker on the side of the building noting Constanze's time here.
