John Steinbeck's home is located on Gramercy Park North in New York City. The young author came to New York in 1925 with the intention of publishing his short stories and to that end he rented a sixth floor apartment in this building after his arrival. He took on a series of odd jobs in order to pay his minimal expenses, including a job at the New York World as a cub reporter. The newspaper work didn't last long and with no prospects in site for a writing carreer in the imminent future Steinbeck packed up and headed back to California. It would be another three years before his first novel, Cup of Gold, was published.
