The Herndon Home is located on University Place in Atlanta, Georgia. The 1910 Beaux Arts mansion was the home of former slave Alonzo Herndon and his family. After the Civil War and emancipation, Herndon took advantage of the new opportunities before him and opened a string of barbershops in the Atlanta area.So successful was his enterprise that he was able to take money he made from the business and invest it in real estate.By 1900 he was the largest black property owner in Atlanta. He would later found the Atlanta Life Insurance Company and go on to become the city’s first black millionaire. When Alonzo died in 1927 the house passed onto his son, Norris, who lived in the home for much of his life.It was Norris who established the Alonzo F. and Norris B. Herndon Foundation, which still maintains the house as a museum. The Herndon Home was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000.
