The Hotel John Marshall is located on 5th Street in Richmond, Virginia. The neoclassical style structure was built in 1929, opening just a day after the Stock Market Crash, on October 30, 1929. The hotel, designed by architect Marcellus E. Wright, standing 16 stories tall and including 418 rooms, was the largest in the state at that time. The hotel flourished for many years but began a slow decline in the 1970's. The hotel closed its doors in 1988, reopened in 1999, then closed for good in 2004. After a lengthy restoration, including the famous neon sign atop the building, the ballroom and the barber shop, the John Marshall opened in 2011 as a luxury apartment complex. During the height of its popularity the hotel hosted many political functions, including presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard M. Nixon, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as Winston Churchill. Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor have also been guests of the hotel. The John Marshall has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
